Gear & Equipment Season 8

Season 8 : Far East

27 October 2024

A new season of Itchy Boots: Season 8! This season is going to be an interesting one - mostly because I only have a vague idea about what my final destination will be, and an even vaguer idea of how to get there. That makes for tricky planning in terms of gear, so for now I have focused on the weather conditions I am expecting for the first leg of the journey, and take it from there.

In this blog I am sharing the gear & equipment that I’ll carry with me this season.

Clothing - REV’IT!

I’ve been a REV’IT! Ambassador for many years now and I absolutely love the Dirt Series line of adventure clothing. This gear is lightweight, comfortable and flexible and CE certified so that means it’s safe to wear on tarmac too.

This season I am wearing the new body protector: the Nucleus Protector jacket. Because I will be crossing some high mountains, I am bringing the Component 2 H2O jacket. This jacket (but in black) kept me warm and dry in Alaska, so I am glad I have it with me again. Just in case I am facing some serious downpour or icy cold winds, the light weight rain jacket will be an extra layer to keep me dry. This is the upgraded Smock Barrier which REV’IT will release later in the year.

On top of my jacket, I wear the trail vest. I was so fortunate to be able to be one of the first people to test out the trail vest. And I have not looked back ever since. I love this vest because it carries my hydration pack, low in the vest so it doesn’t strain my back and I am using every pocket on the side and the front to keep some cash, my Garmin Inreach and my earplugs case. I am a fan!

The Trousers Continent are pants that can be worn over the boots, to make sure water doesn’t run into my boots from the top, but if I want, I can also snuggle them inside the boot.

This season I have the Expedition GTX boots for the first time, that now have a Gore Tex membrane and are also a little easier to step into - I love these!

I have two different gloves with me, for warm weather and cold weather. If temperatures are great, I wear the Dirt Series Massif Gloves and when things get chilly, I use my battery powered heated Liberty H2O Heated Gloves.

Luggage system - Mosko Moto

Why change a winning formula? I’ve been using the Mosko Moto reckless 80 for 5 years already - and still love it. This season, I am using the brand-new 4.0 version, which has some great improvements in terms of buckles and the main plate on which the bags are mounted. I am impressed.

The total volume that I carry in the reckless 80L Revolver (V4.0) is 84 liters: 2 dry bags of 25 liter each, 1 stinger bag 22L bag, 2 removable 4L dry bags and 2 Molle pouches.

For the tankbag, I chose the Hood tankbag again. I like how much space this bag has and the easy access to it. It’s the perfect place to keep camera batteries because I am changing those a lot during the day!

Helmet

This season I have become an Airoh ambassador. I am using the Commander 2 helmet which is a bit lighter than the helmets I had before and I really love the built in sun visor that I use a lot. I can keep my main visor clear, instead of tinted which I had with my other helmets, which means that I can ride in the dark without issues and when it is sunny I use the sun visor.

Navigation system - Tablet

When I raced the Baja Rally in Mexico, I met rally racer Willem Avenant and he developed this tablet to use for digital roadbook rallies.  I like that it’s just android so you can put apps on it and use opensource navigation apps for navigation (like OSMand). So you won’t be restricted to Garmin maps for example. Here is the link to his website: The Rally Tab

And that’s it, my most important pieces of gear that I am wearing and using for this Season of adventures!

Hi Noraly! What microphone are you using in your helmet? I have the same helmet and also the GoPro Hero 13 and I can't come close to your sound quality. The Rode Lavalier II can't handle the audio levels above around 40-50km/h, and cheap mics I've tried are just unacceptable. I also experimented with the Ace Pro 2 camera, but the helmet audio quality with that using an external mic was completely unusable.

I got so much from reading Free Ride!
Off to get my bike license now...

"Nobody would have thought we'd come this far" & "i welcomed my intuition like an old friend. "...
Both quotes from your book that are now written in my notebook as reminders to not be so hard on ourselves.

Joy is a constant: something you get from doing what you are fashioned to do, no matter the outcome! It's the journey.

Keep making videos and writing books Noraly - you dont realise how many people need these to look forward to when they are still gathering the courage neded to be adventurous themselves.

Thieves can take stuff away...but they will never be able to take what you have gained from your Free Ride. You're laughing in their faces.

Ps. I love how you signed all the books in the libraries and stores along the way. ( and giggled with joy )

Just completed reading your book, Free Ride, and wanted to congratulate you on a great read. Enjoyed every page of the book and reliving the videos that were described in the book and also getting to know more about the personal side and what made you make the decision to start such a journey. I don't believe that many of us realize the amount of work it takes to do what you do and to bring such great videos to us. Continue to have fun exploring the world. Ride Safe and Be well.

Dear Noraly,
Dove into Free Ride and couldn't put it down. Congratulations on an excellent publication. Great photo section. I'm now reading it a second time because every sentence you wrote has special meaning and I usually miss some details the first time through. And just like the videos, Free Ride was engaging, emotional (cried and laughed) and intense. When done, it left me wanting more. The personal details you added connected many dots as after watching 723 videos, numerous interviews and chat sessions, I can't help but wonder about your childhood, parents, previous experiences, and what drives you to be the wonderful role model you are. One thing even more clear after Free Ride is we can never know what challenges you are facing behind the scenes when we watch a video. Watching S1 and now after reading book and seeing the emotional roller coaster you were on is a lot to process. Somehow you managed to rise (and ride) above, have and promote joy in the midst of terrible trials. You were setting an important life example then and we didn't even know the depth of it, but that gradually became more obvious in successive seasons. Big hello and thanks to Mandy (hope riding CRF 250 is going well)and your dearest parents.
Ride Safe! Peace! Or rather, Assalamu Alaikum!

Hi there, hope you all are well and in good condition :-). Can you please give us another update of your map, please :-) Would be great!!
And you you think, that people from other countries can order the English edition of your book via your shop here at the page? Or do you know, whether there's a way to buy also the English edition in a dutch bookshop? Have fun in the UK, wish u a safe trip across the island :-) Regards from Germany, Ulf
