Another new bike?! When I started my ride around the world, I didn't think I would buy motorcycle number 5 within three years. I have to admit, motorcycles are my biggest passion so getting to know different motorcycles isn't quite a punishment. But still, if it wasn't for the worldwide pandemic, that made me change plans and improvise all the time, I would probably still be riding on motorcycle number 2.
My choice for my latest motorcycle is largely determined by my experiences with different bikes in the previous years and better knowing what I want. And what I want is simple. A low budget, lightweight, small capacity motorcycle, that is easy to handle on rough terrain on my own, that requires minimal maintenance and that is crazy reliable. These requirements pretty much immediately rule out the two bikes that I currently have in The Netherlands: Royal Enfield Himalayan "Dhanno" and Honda CB500x "Ronin".
In case you missed it, Dhanno, who got stranded with me in Peru, has returned to The Netherlands. It took a painful 8 months to evacuate the bike out of Peru, after I had to flee the country due to Covid-19. She finally returned back alone by cargo ship. When I unpacked her at the port in Rotterdam, it soon became clear that this bike wasn't going anywhere anymore. Eight months in a humid parking garage in Lima, Peru, with filthy petrol in the tank, and some not-so-good crating/transport, pretty much killed this motorcycle.
And how about Ronin, the Honda CB500x, my other motorcycle in The Netherlands? After my adventures in Europe, I was planning to take Ronin back to South America. I even did an entire Rally Raid suspension upgrade on the bike, to make it more offroad suitable. Ronin was basically just waiting for me to go on a new adventure.
And yet, I am not taking Ronin with me on my next adventure. My recent experience with my Honda CRF250L Savannah in Southern Africa made something crystal clear to me. I don't necessarily need a powerful bike, I need a light bike.
Once I returned back from Africa to The Netherlands and got out on Ronin again, all I could think was: “What a heavy, awkward beast.” Great for riding tarmac or light gravel roads around Europe, but not so great for hectic off-roading.
So what then? Fixing up Dhanno? Although the Himalayan only has 24.5 horsepower, it weighs almost 200 kilograms. It is incredibly heavy for a small capacity bike. And well, after experiencing the light and nimble CRF250L, there was simply no way I was going to lug around such a heavy bike ever again.
When I was in South Africa, I had the pleasure to borrow some KTMs from fellow riders. I rode a KTM EXC 450, a KTM EXC 500 and a KTM 790 adventure. I have to admit, I love the sight of these KTMs. Truth to be told, they are some very pretty motorcycles. But....the height is an issue for me as a vertically challenged rider. I suppose you can do things (to the bike that is) to fix that issue, but the 790 adventure I found still too heavy in weight to my liking.
The EXC 450 and 500 are just feather light. They weigh less than 120 kilograms! Perfect. However, there are two big 'howevers', the service intervals are killing for these rally oriented bikes and the reliability is also still an issue for KTM. Over the years, I've just heard too many riders struggling with electrical problems and since I am no mechanic and like to ride in very remote areas alone, these bikes are not the most suitable ones for me. Two of my main requirement boxes, minimal maintenance and reliability, are not ticked by these KTM’s.
My experiences with the very reliable Ronin and Savannah, made me look at a Honda once again. And within the small capacity, light, single cylinder, budget, off-road motorcycles, there is only one option available: the new CRF300 Rally. You could consider it a new and improved version of Savannah. It has all the things I loved about the CRF250L, but has a bigger fuel tank (very important!), some wind protection and a little more horsepower (4 HP more).
I said I was looking for a budget bike, and since the CRF300 is definitely Honda’s budget adventure bike, you can tell there was some compromising on the quality of the suspension for example. It basically comes with a cheap shock. I might upgrade the suspension in the future, especially if I want to compete in another rally, but for now, I will leave the bike with the OEM suspension. A combination of limited time to do upgrades and the money involved in it, made me decide to leave her as she is.

I'm considering buying my own Alaska because my 2021 Klx230 is having dash speedometer issues. It has stopped working at least 4 times and it's not even a year old..

Well experience wise you know what you really want. I have a similar experience and that is riding a loop around Mindanao Island. For two years I planned this ride alone and bringing only my son. And so we did ride on that early morning of April 2021. And because of the pandemic, the checkpoints then were very strict. And so at the last control point of Zamboanga city, we were held there for more than an hour and it was already 6 pm. And it was getting so dark. We met an accident on one of the curves and we literally flew off the ground. Fortunately we had only bruises and scratches. We slept in Zamboanga and excitedly went on the next day. We were so confident because the road on the west of the peninsula was concreted but lo and behold, on the middle part of the journey the road was rutted, potholed and full of big rocks. And so from then on I crashed 24 times. It so happened that the locals were so helpful and they even shared their lunch with us. And then came the realization when they asked us if it was our first time to pass this road and why did we bring a 300-kg motorcycle with us. We could have brought an underbone or a scooter. And so now I know that powerful and heavy bikes can never be used in this kind of road. I literally made my cruiser bike into an off-road bike. And though I and my son enjoyed the views, we finished our journey in three weeks and we had travelled 3000 kilometers, a very short ride compared to you.
Great choice based only on your requirements.

I think this was an excellent choice. I have been riding for 15 years, and because I, too, am vertically challenged (5'4"), I have stayed away from adventure bikes, even though I desperately want to ride off road. But since watching your travels, I have been inspired to believe I can definitely ride a smaller of road/adventure bike successfully. I can't wait for the riding part of your adventure to begin. Ride safe, be safe....Especially in Mexico. But I have no doubt you have strategically planned your route. So excited to watch another adventure. I am in the U.S. and I did my first Cross County Trip this summer. 6,551 miles from North Carolina to Montana's Glacier National Park, Yellow Stone Park in Wyoming, the Badlands National Part in South Dakota (As well as stopping by Sturgis Motorcycle Rally) and then back home in 25 days. It was 99% on Tarmac. LOL.....There were some gravel roads we had to ride in Montana, but of course nothing at all like you ride. But I enjoyed it. I'm sure that when you plan your trips you look a bit ahead where you are going just to have a general panorama, but not too deep into, since it would be boring. I dare to suggest, and please, don't think I'm patronizing in any way, that you avoid Venezuela, not only because it is not safe, which is what is really worrying, also because the fuel and lubricating oils are not easy to obtain; the border crossing between Colombia and Venezuela is randomly closed and a lot of etceteras... Again, my intention is to give you my best advice, I would feel bad if I didn't tell you. I was born and raised in Venezuela, got out of there 3 years ago.

Congratulations on getting Alaska (wow, that certainly looks odd now that I have written it). I tend to choose light weight and dependability over higher power myself. There always seems to be a fight against the part of my brain that has “The NEED for SPEED”, though. The CFR300L’s engine should be powerful enough to get you virtually anywhere. The wind protection and larger fuel tank should come in handy. It will be interesting to see what you decide about the suspension. I will donate to the “Upgrade the Suspension Fund” if you decide it is necessary.
While following your travels, I realized that I have finally turned into my Parents. I once thought it funny that they worried so much when my siblings and I went on adventures. Now that I have adult children, I noticed that I have strong paternal instincts that have broadened to apply to other young people like you. As I follow your travels, I notice a voice in the back of my mind that sounds just like my Mother saying: “My goodness, I worry about that Young Lady. She certainly takes lot of risks. Oh my, oh my, OH MY!”

Well, I picked that one pretty well in consideration of your past adventures, your need for reliability and light weight (I believe the CRF300 is actually a touch lighter than the CRF250, although I am not sure about the Rally model). I am confident that you will upgrade the suspension at your first opportunity, but no hurry.

I totally agree with your reasons for buying the CRF300L Rally. I just got mine after waiting for four months. I have just a 100 miles (160 km) on it and hope to get to put some more miles on it before the snow comes. I have a NC700X that weighs 470LB (211.5 kg) and it is to heavy for me to be picking it up so I am going to sell it. I am definitely looking forward to your up and coming video's I would not miss it for the world. Some of my friends think I am a little bit crazy because I am always talking about the woman from Holland that travels the world on a motorcycle but I am ok with that riding is my passion and I want to get in as much adventuring in as I can at the ripe old age of 70. Perfect choice and name! I agree 💯 percent in your whole thought process in making your selection. I'm now going to want to test ride it as a possible replacement for my xt 250. You certainly would be a great ambassador for Honda to increase the percentage of women off road riders. I love my light xt 250 for that reason but I just need a little more power to keep up with my husband's GS 700.
So looking forward to your South America trip! If you decide to pass through Belize, make a stop to the world's first jaguar preserve in the Cockscomb Basin. Belize was my light bulb moment to get rid of my cruiser for a dual sport due to roads that take you into the forest.

Welcome back - we all missed you. Congrats on the new bike. I do have to chuckle a bit when you say 200 kilos is a heavy bike. My frankentrike is pretty close to 450 kgs. Not the nimblest offroad machine but it still gets me around.

I must say that the Himalayan is now my go to bike as its so easy and gets you there maybe not as quickly but it delivers. I guessed you would choose the Honda after your comments about wanting a lighter bike and thinking about the reliability of Honda as opposed to KTM. Great name for her! I was concerned you left your Mosko Moto luggage with Savannah but now I see I needn't have worried - new gear!!
You might have an option for the suspension without breaking the bank.
The Ténéré 700 you put in the list has an option (also by Rally Raid) for just a spring because that suspension is also just a bit too soft and that option is less than €100.
Knew you just put the T700 in the list because it's popularity but i own one and it's too tall for you and too heavy as well even though it's not that heavy for a 2cilinder 700cc bike. I have to say that it feels much lighter for me because my other bike is the Honda VFR1200X 275kg full wet and without options.
You made the perfect choice and that's why i voted the CRF300R, hope you still can get another spring mounted to make it just a little more perfect for a relatively low price ;)
I felt you would go with Honda based on your criteria of light, longer service intervals, and, lets face it, exceptional reliability. I also get the "vertically challenged" issue as I belong in that group as well. Can't wait till your new adventure begins and hopefully our paths may cross as you go through the USA.

I had guessed on a KTM for you but I see that the Honda is much better, What does surprise me is that you always want a loud exhaust - yet you then wear ear plugs to protect your hearing! I'm sorry to hear that Dhanno had deteriorated while stored in Peru, not really surprising though. She could be rebuilt I expect but is it worth the expense? Congratulations on reaching 900K subscribers, almost unbelievable, here comes a million! I have really missed you this last few weeks, I'm slowly following reruns of Season 2 in Argentina, you are visiting the milodon today!. I wonder where you will recommence your trip to Alaska this time. you sisn;t have much time in Laoaz before you had to run to Peru at very short notice. Hi Noraly, I also have the CRF300l and I love it. I live in Nicaragua and the 300l is perfect for Central America. It is actually considered a big Moto here as most ride 125s. I was surprised how excited I got when you chose it and also returning to ride the Americas. A double bonus.

Poor Dhanno! Mind you, this might even be considered an opportunity, all be it for bad reasons - you were saying you wanted a flat track race bike, & over in the US, Enfield have been running a women's flat track racing programme called Build Train Race which involves turning similar machines to yours into flat track & road race bikes. Dhanno might yet have a future as your flat-tracker!
Do you think you might send Alaska home & swap in Ronin when you hit the US? There's a lot more tarmac & a lot less dirt once you cross the border...
My only request is to see the sentence about Ronin (8 months humid garage, bad crating, killed this motorcycle) in the FAQs and Route. Because there will be some questions about Ronin...
Great choice of bike and I love her name, too. It's from the native Aleut word meaning, "great land". Which is what you will see all along your route and then especially so when you get there. Just don't camp out with the bears!
To me the shocker in yesterday's video is that you are probably already in South America, and I so look forward to seeing those countries, and my own USA, through your eyes.

Good choice, the only negative characteristic is the the seat, by my opinion, too high. I have two bikes, a Borile Multiuso, the saddle is 80 cm from the ground and a Beta ALP 4.0, saddle at 83 cm from the ground. Love both, I'm trying to organize some travel with the ALP. It was motorized with a Suzuki 350 cc, Good enough for very long travels, like Italy-Mongolia with only an issue to the seat, repaired with a soldering work. It has been discontinued unfortunately. If the rear shock absorber give the same sensations of the one of Savannah, well, with Savannah you did what you did, somwich Is the problem? Wilbers, Online and other brands exist and you have already considered pro and cons of the upgrade, highness main cons. Ride safely, open gas with responsability. 😉

Of course, I can't wait until you cross over into the USA, there are so many options, it will be interesting to see where you come across and what your route is to Seattle, (if it is). Hi Noraly, Great choice of motorcycle and for all the reasons you list. I've made a similar choice 2 years ago, a WR250R, but I've had to make a lot of changes to it. In MHO the WR250R stock is set up for no more than a sunny Sunday afternoon ride around the block on pavement. The changes have made all the difference. I wonder what you had to change out on your new Honda. I changed foot pegs to tougher ones, added crash bars, did "things" to let the engine breathe (and what a difference THAT made!) changed handlebars, added risers so I could control the bike better while standing (and I'm vertically challenged, too,) a shorter easier pull clutch lever, re-valved the rear shock (and got a remarkable upgrade in stiction,) added hand guards and a durable skid plate, got rid of the, ahem, dog taking a dump rear fender, added an LED headlight, signals and brake light and I forget what else. Oh, yes...rim locks! Don't forget the rim locks. Both wheels. We don't like to air down but sometimes.... You've done many of these mods. I'll look more closely at the picture of your new Honda to see just how up to date I am not about the mods you now do to your bikes. I envy your bike's larger fuel tank. It's Christmas time. I've gotta get my girl that gift.
I was sure you were going to buy a CRF300L Rally for your next bike. You had a lot less struggles in Africa and one of the reasons is the bike it self.
The Rally solves a lot of the issues you came across with the CRF250L. Larger tank, a bit more power and some wind protection.
Hope the subframe is stronger, your issue with the subframe got me worried about my subframe on my CB300R. I have a large Givi top case and I'm going to take a closer look at my frame next spring when my bike gets out of storage cause of our cold Canadian winter 😅

Hi Noraly, I think you've made a great call with the CRF300. I run a KTM1090 and I know I couldn't take it to some of the extreme places you ride! I did laugh at your You Tube comment about not having a decent exhaust, but understand we all have to fit our budgets. I'm so glad you are back and returning to South America, the motorcycle looks great. I'm actually in Bolivia right now but going back home (Houston, Texas, USA) at the end of January so I'm following your foot steps by afar.

Curious as to what your starting point will be in South America and what are your thoughts of when you will reach Alaska. Since you are a great planned I'm sure you have things sort of lined up. My reason for all this is general weather. If you are hitting the upper middle of the west coast anytime before say April, I hope you will be prepared for the posibility of some cold temperatures and potential non driving weather. South America this time of year, as you know, is almost the perfect riding season. I'm hoping you will take the time and explore the country of Colombia as it has so many diverse regions. Most that travel to the USA from South America head out through Panama without really giving Colombia its due. No matter what you decide you exude the joy of riding and exploration and show much higher grit than most riders let alone humans.

Zweispur: No, there is no rear subframe on the 300. It is all one piece. This has advantages and disadvantages, like everything. I keep hoping Honda will send her to a major rally and give her a 450 for it.
Great to see you are getting back on the road and returning to South America. I really enjoy your YouTube videos. You give a slightly different viewpoint on travel to most YouTubers. It’s a good combination between experiences you have on your bike and commentary about the amazing countryside, towns and cities you travel through on your adventures.
Due to arthritis my bike riding days sadly seem to have come to an end. However through your eyes I can still enjoy some of the experiences of riding a bike in amazing places. Thank you!
Decades of riding ( I am 68 yrs old ) My big bikes are all way in the past. 2 years ago , I traded in my carburated older 250 Ninja on a new Yamaha R3 with fuel injection and modern tech. Love it! It was still an increase in performance and the lightness and handling on paved Michigan back roads is great. I tested a Ducati Scrambler ( much fun ) and rode the R3 home again. An extra: is your Netherlands riding schools had myself and my son seek out the same type of dirt bike school here in Florida on a trip. Loved it! Thanks again and ride Noraly ride....RT

Well, although the Himalayan is a rock solidly built battle beast, I guess the burdens of off- roading as much as you have done with her would have shown by now. ...and, as you would have ridden many, many miles of highway at the top end of her rpm-range by now, wear on bearings in the engine. But that's guessing. 🤷
Is Alaska's rear frame designed the same way as Savannah's? As you will encounter many more corrugated roads, it may be a good idea to take precautions to prevent it from cracking as well. The last stage of the Kalahari Rally wasn't the cause for the metal fatigue after all, or even the rally, but 20000 kilometres of vibration accumulated. Maybe keep it as an option for a big maintenance stop to add a reinforcement into the horizontal tubes of the rear frame. A tightly fitting aluminium tube of some 30 to 40cm length glued in with epoxy resin, equal lengths extending around the point where the lower strut is attached, probably would be the strongest fix for the trouble.
..or maybe some DIY support for the luggage onto the rear seat foot pegs to share the load onto more components of the structure... Just thinking aloud here. Like, brainstorming.
Anyhoo: Lovely bike, and you probably mainly feel the extra torque the extra 8mm of stroke provide you with.

Dear Noraly, this is a great choice, your new companion! Honda's motorcycles usually do what is expected of them, just work. After your experiences with Honda, Ronin and Savannah, the choice was actually no surprise, I immediately guessed the Honda.
I'm looking forward to the new / old season, especially to hear you speak Spanish again. You saved my day yesterday with the first episode.
